Things to do in Rangeley, Maine
Outdoor Recreation: This four season destination in western Maine has it all for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. The area’s lakes offer boating, fishing and swimming during the warmer months of the year. If you prefer to stay dry, you can golf, play tennis, hike and go mountain biking or ATV riding. The abundant snow season offers Nordic and alpine skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. No matter what you’re doing any time of year, you’re sure to spot amazing wildlife at some point.
Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway: Everyone will enjoy this 35-mile scenic drive winding through the mountains and lakes of western Maine. A full day or more can be spent enjoying spectacular scenery, outdoor activities, wildlife viewing and quaint New England villages.
Saddleback Ski Area: Just 7 miles away from Rangeley Lake Resort, Saddleback boasts over 8,000 acres of high alpine peaks and forest with 2,000 vertical feet of skiing available. Skiers of all levels will enjoy thrills here with trails and glades for beginners and intermediates, and black diamonds and double black diamonds for advanced and expert level skiers.
Sugarloaf Ski & Golf: Just 30 miles away from Rangeley is one of the most popular skiing and golfing areas in the Northeast. Among many other awards, the golf course has been rated #1 in Maine every year since 1985 by Golf Digest. For skiers, there are 54 miles of developed trails and 1400 skiable acres on the property, with the state’s second highest peak at 4,237 feet.
Mingo Springs Golf Course: Just over 3 miles from the resort, this historic 18-hole golf course is known for its challenging play and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains at 1500 feet above sea level.
Hiking: While there are hundreds of trails in and around Rangeley, the most notable may be the section of the Appalachian Trail that snakes through the area. Some consider this part of the trail the toughest part in all 14. Serious hikers will enjoy peak fall foliage in early September. Those who are interested in a scenic stroll rather than a strenuous trek have plenty of smaller, easier trails to choose from the in the area.
